A Girl's Name

a long time ago when she was young
her mother bought her a little cake
for her birthday with her name written
on it in frosting covered with fluffy
whipped cream and it was delicious
she said mom i want this every birthday
and her mom said yes of course
so she bought that cake
every year for her birthday
but by the eighth year she was
grown up and her mother was dead

she stands against the brick wall
her back straight and eyes straight
her hands soft
and her expression warm
she moves forward slowly
hesitant at first but eventually
she begins running frantically
and then into the arms of

trust he says trust he insists
blindness and temptation and
the cocktail of deception
but
she is not deceived
she will not succumb
not falter

strength in her bones
will in her heart
heart in her mind

and the days go on
as she is still standing
smiling
looking far into the horizon
and people calling her name
